#301 Types of bikes
Your choice of bike shapes the whole bikepacking experience. Each category serves a specific use, and the right compromise sits at the intersection of the terrain you're targeting, the budget available, and the versatility you're after. This page focuses on bikes capable of riding off the road — on gravel tracks, dirt roads, and trails — which by definition excludes pure road bikes.
The gravel bike
The gravel bike is a drop-bar bike (curved handlebar) designed to ride on roads and unpaved tracks. Its geometry is more stable and more comfortable than a road bike's, with a longer wheelbase and a less aggressive position. The tires, generally between 35 and 50 mm wide, strike a compromise between rolling efficiency on the road and grip on gravel. The gravel bike is the most versatile bike in this selection. It lets you ride efficiently on the road for bike commuting, while still being able to handle forest roads and tracks in good condition. It reaches its limits on technical trails, however: roots, rock gardens, and steep gradients put it in difficulty, for lack of suspension and sufficiently wide tires. For bikepacking, the gravel bike is ideal on mixed road/gravel routes (think EuroVelo, greenways extended by forest tracks). It's also the most sensible choice for combining daily bike commuting with weekend bikepacking outings, keeping the stable down to a single bike.
The rigid MTB (hardtail)
The rigid MTB, or hardtail, has a suspension fork up front but no suspension at the rear. The frame is rigid, which simplifies maintenance and cuts weight compared with a full-suspension bike. The handlebar is flat, giving a more upright position and more intuitive handling than a gravel bike. The fork soaks up impacts at the front, which makes the hardtail noticeably more capable than a gravel bike on technical terrain. It takes wide tires (2.2" to 2.6"), suited to trails with roots, rocks, and loose dirt. Descending is safer and more comfortable. The main drawback is lower efficiency on the road: the upright position, wide tires, and fork weight all cost you speed on tarmac. For bike commuting, it's an acceptable compromise if the route includes unpaved sections, but less enjoyable than a gravel bike on an exclusively road-based commute.
The semi-rigid MTB with no rear suspension
The distinction between a rigid and a semi-rigid MTB sometimes causes confusion. In the context of this page, the term "semi-rigid" refers to an MTB with a suspension fork and a rigid frame — in other words, a hardtail. Full-suspension bikes (suspension at both front and rear) fall outside the bikepacking scope covered here: their weight, mechanical complexity, and maintenance costs make them poorly suited to self-supported touring.
The fat bike
The fat bike is a bike fitted with oversized tires (3.8" to 5") mounted on very wide rims. Originally designed for riding on snow and sand, it offers a huge contact patch with the ground, letting you make progress on terrain where any other bike would bog down. The fat bike earns its place in very specific contexts: polar expeditions, desert crossings, winter outings on packed snow. Outside those uses, its high weight and poor efficiency make it an unconvincing choice for classic bikepacking. It's a niche bike, to be considered only if the project demands it.
The electric-assist bike (e-bike)
The e-bike deserves a place in this overview, not as a primary bikepacking bike, but as a complementary tool for bike commuting and training. Electric assist lets you modulate the effort to suit your needs: ride at high intensity with the assist switched off, hold a moderate effort with it partially engaged, or simply get home without excessive fatigue after a heavy day at work. In winter, the e-bike really comes into its own. The conditions (cold, wind, wet roads) make bike commuting more demanding, and the assist lets you keep your commutes consistent without exhausting yourself. It's also a lever for long commutes (over 20 km) that would otherwise be hard to sustain daily. Managing the assist works much like a training tool: by adjusting the level of assistance, you can target a precise heart-rate intensity, turning the home-to-work commute into a structured session. Battery weight, limited range, and dependence on charging points make it a poor match for self-supported touring. Which bike should you choose?
The choice depends above all on the terrain and the intended use. For a combined practice of bike commuting and bikepacking on mixed routes, the gravel bike is the most rational choice: a single bike covers both uses. If your bikepacking outings target more demanding terrain (trails, singletrack), the hardtail MTB is preferable, even if that means accepting a less comfortable commute on the road. If the goal is to shrink the stable — and therefore the costs — aiming for one versatile bike is the most effective strategy. A gravel bike fitted with wide tires (45-50 mm) comes close to a hardtail's capabilities on moderate terrain. Conversely, a hardtail with semi-slick tires remains usable for bike commuting. The fat bike is only justified for specific projects in extreme conditions. The e-bike is a worthwhile complement for bike commuting, not a replacement for a non-assisted bike for bikepacking.
