#301 Technical basics and equipment
Mastering the technical basics of the bike and understanding its components lets you ride more efficiently, avoid injuries, and make the right equipment choices. This page covers the fundamentals you need before getting into bikepacking.
Position on the bike
A correct position determines comfort, performance, and injury prevention. On a 10 km commute, a poor position is an annoyance. On a multi-day outing, it becomes a serious problem — back pain, numb hands, knee pain. Three parameters are decisive: saddle height, saddle setback, and saddle-to-handlebar distance. Saddle height defines leg extension: a saddle that's too low overloads the knees, one that's too high causes the hips to rock. Saddle setback positions the knee relative to the bottom bracket axis. The saddle-to-handlebar distance determines torso angle and how weight is distributed between the hands and the saddle. A professional bike fit is the most reliable way to get a properly adapted position. It's an investment that spares you plenty of problems later on.
Contact points
The body touches the bike in three places: the saddle, the pedals, and the handlebar. Each of these points deserves particular attention. The saddle is the most frequent source of discomfort. The choice depends on your pelvic anatomy (sit bone width) and the position adopted on the bike. A narrower saddle suits an aggressive position (gravel), a wider saddle an upright position (MTB). The only reliable criterion is trying them: two riders of the same build can need very different saddles. Pedals come in two families: flat and clipless. Flat pedals offer freedom of movement and instant release, suited to beginners and technical riding. Clipless pedals lock the shoe to the pedal via a cleat, improving power transfer and letting you pull on the upstroke. For bikepacking, MTB-style clipless pedals (SPD) are a good compromise: unclipping is easy and the shoes remain walkable. The handlebar determines hand position and therefore the comfort of your arms, shoulders, and back. A drop bar (gravel) offers several hand positions, which relieves the hands over long stretches. A flat bar (MTB) offers a single position but more direct handling. Ergonomic grips and quality bar tape reduce the vibrations transmitted to the hands.
Drivetrain
The drivetrain converts pedaling effort into motion. It comprises the crankset (chainrings), the cassette (rear sprockets), the chain, and the derailleurs. Modern drivetrains favor the single-chainring setup (1x): one chainring up front, a wide cassette at the rear. This system simplifies shifting, cuts weight, and eliminates the front derailleur, a frequent source of mechanical problems. The gear range of a modern 1x drivetrain (for example 40 teeth up front, 10-52 at the rear) covers most bikepacking needs. For very hilly terrain or loaded riding (heavy bags), a small chainring (32-34 teeth) paired with a wide cassette provides the gearing you need to climb without straining.
Braking
Hydraulic disc brakes are now the standard for bikepacking. They deliver powerful, well-modulated braking in all weather, with low lever effort. Mechanical (cable-actuated) disc brakes are an alternative that's simpler to maintain and repair in the field, at the cost of slightly lower power and modulation. Rotor size influences braking power: 160 mm rotors suit lighter riders and moderate terrain, while 180 mm offers extra margin for heavy loads and long descents. Pads come in organic (gentle braking, fast wear) and metallic (sharper braking, longer life) versions. When bikepacking, carrying a spare pair of pads is a reasonable precaution. Wheels and tires
Wheels are the component with the biggest influence on how the bike behaves. Two formats dominate: 700c (the road and gravel standard) and 29" (the MTB standard). The two formats are identical in rim diameter — the difference lies in rim width and the width of the tires fitted. Tire choice is a compromise between rolling efficiency (narrow, smooth tire) and grip (wide, knobby tire). For bikepacking, favor versatility: a moderately knobby, mid-width tire (40-50 mm for gravel, 2.2-2.4" for MTB) covers the majority of terrain. A tubeless setup (no inner tube) is a significant advantage in bikepacking: it sharply reduces the risk of punctures thanks to the sealant, lets you run lower pressures (better comfort and grip), and eliminates pinch flats. Carrying a spare inner tube remains necessary, however, in case of a major tear.
Carrying systems
Bikepacking differs from classic cycle touring in its carrying system: the bags attach directly to the frame, fork, handlebar, and seatpost, with no rack. This system is lighter, better centered, and compatible with bikes that lack mounting eyelets. The main locations are: the frame bag, which uses the frame triangle to hold heavy items at the center of gravity; the seat pack, attached under the saddle, which takes bulky, light equipment such as the sleeping bag; the handlebar bag, ideal for camp gear or clothing; and fork bags, which spread weight on either side of the front wheel. The fundamental rule is to place heavy items as low and as central on the bike as possible, and light items at the periphery.
