#301 Bike commuting as training

Bike commuting — riding to work — is an underrated training lever when preparing for bikepacking. Once the home-to-work distance exceeds 10 km, every commute becomes an opportunity to accumulate aerobic volume without cutting into your free time. It's invisible training, built into daily life, sustainable and extremely effective.

The principle: training built into daily life

The major challenge of endurance sports training is fitting enough volume into a busy schedule (see #101 - Training). Bike commuting solves that equation by turning transport time — usually unproductive — into training time. A 15 km one-way commute represents roughly 45 minutes of moderate-intensity effort. Multiply that by two trips and five days, and you accumulate a weekly volume of 7 to 8 hours without encroaching on your personal life. That volume builds a solid aerobic base, directly transferable to bikepacking: fundamental endurance, the habit of daily effort, resistance to accumulated fatigue. Bike commuting also teaches you to ride tired — a valuable skill when touring.

Prerequisite: the shower

For bike commuting to work as a training tool, one condition is non-negotiable: having a shower at your workplace. Without one, the fear of sweating forces you to ride at low intensity, which considerably reduces the commute's physical value. With a shower, every commute can be approached as a real session, no compromises. Before committing to a bike commuting routine, checking for washing facilities is the first step. A locker or storage space for your work things also makes the logistics easier.

The benefits beyond endurance

Bike commuting isn't just about piling up kilometers. It simultaneously develops several skills directly useful in bikepacking. Bike handling. Riding daily in traffic, on varied surfaces, and in all weather builds ease on the bike. Anticipation, line management, and braking in degraded conditions become reflexes. If the commute includes unpaved sections (paths, gravel tracks), your off-road handling skills progress naturally. Managing weather conditions. Riding year-round forces you to face rain, cold, wind, and heat. It's hands-on schooling in the layering system applied to cycling (see #101 - Gear): knowing what to wear for the conditions, understanding your limits in the cold, learning to manage sweat under a waterproof jacket. Mechanics. Sooner or later, breakdowns happen on a bike ridden daily. Punctures, dropped chains, slack cables, worn pads: every incident is a chance to learn to diagnose and repair, in a context where the consequences are minor. That know-how becomes critical in bikepacking, far from any workshop. See #301 - Maintenance and repair. Gear testing. The daily commute is a permanent test bench. Position on the bike, saddle comfort, clothing effectiveness, lighting reliability: everything gets tested and adjusted day after day, without having to wait for a dedicated outing.

The e-bike as a training tool

The electric-assist bike (e-bike) isn't reserved for those who want to pedal less. Used thoughtfully, it becomes a training tool in its own right. The principle is simple: you manage the assistance level to target the intensity you want. Assist off for a high-intensity session, minimal assist for a commute in the fundamental endurance zone, maximum assist for an active recovery ride home. Paired with a heart rate strap or a power meter, every commute can be structured with the same precision as an indoor trainer session. The e-bike makes particular sense in winter. Cold, darkness, and bad weather make non-assisted bike commuting more mentally demanding. Electric assist lets you keep your commutes consistent by lowering the psychological barrier, without eliminating the physical effort. It's also an effective solution for long distances (beyond 20 km), where the travel time on a non-assisted bike would become a constraint. See #301 - Types of bikes for e-bike characteristics.

Equipment for bike commuting

Bike commuting equipment has to meet four requirements: visibility, protection from the elements, adaptation to winter conditions, and carrying your things. Visibility. Front (at least 300 lumens) and rear lights are essential, even in daylight. Reflective elements on your clothing or bag improve how well drivers spot you, particularly at dawn and dusk. For helmets and locks, Abus is the benchmark brand. Protective glasses limit the discomfort caused by wind, rain, and spray in degraded conditions. All-weather protection. The layering system applies to cycling just as it does to hiking (see #101 - Gear): breathable base layer, insulating layer if needed, waterproof and windproof shell. For rain, Gore-Tex membranes (Paclite and Active lines) offer the best combination of waterproofing and breathability. Rapha and Gore both offer technical cycling clothing designed for riding in all conditions. For gloves, Rab offers good value for money with models suited to a wide temperature range. Mudguards prevent water and mud spray, considerably improving comfort in wet weather. Winter-specific equipment. Winter demands targeted adaptations for the extremities and the tires. Pogies (handlebar mitts) protect the hands from cold and wind without sacrificing dexterity at the controls. Waterproof overshoes (Gore and equivalents) keep feet dry and warm in cold, wet weather. On icy or snow-covered roads, studded tires let you maintain grip: the Continental Contact Spike 240 works on dry roads as well as on ice; the Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro is geared toward deep snow. Carrying your things. Two approaches coexist, with different trade-offs. The waterproof pannier (Ortlieb-style) mounted on a rack is the most comfortable solution while riding: the weight doesn't load your back, the center of gravity is low, and the contents stay quickly accessible. On the other hand, the bag is exposed in a crash, and dealing with it on arrival (removing, carrying, storing) can be a hassle depending on your work environment. The backpack makes getting around easier once you've arrived and reduces your gear's exposure in a crash. Its main drawback is heat buildup on your back and back pain over long distances, especially if the bag is loaded. The contents must be protected from rain by internal dry bags.
