#301 Choosing your e-bike

Choosing an e-bike for bike commuting comes down to several interdependent technical parameters: motor position, available torque, battery range, drivetrain quality, and frame material. This page reviews the decisive criteria for intensive use.

Motor position

Two architectures coexist: the rear-hub motor and the bottom-bracket motor (known as mid-drive). The rear-hub motor gets you to the maximum assisted speed (25 km/h) quickly and is generally found on less expensive bikes. Its main drawback is logistical: swapping wheelsets means transferring the motor or buying a second motorized wheel, which multiplies the investment. The mid-drive motor delivers more torque at the wheel, which makes restarting on climbs and loaded starts (trailer, panniers) easier. It lets you use several wheelsets without duplicating the motor — a concrete advantage for winter bike commuting, where alternating between all-season, snow, and studded tires is common. The pedaling feel is also more natural. On a hilly route or for use with a load (child seat, trailer), the mid-drive motor is the one to go for.

Motor systems: brands and ranges

The benchmark brand is Bosch, available in several ranges:

Shimano offers high-performing motors, found mainly on electric MTBs. Mahle and Fazua equip lighter bikes with smaller-capacity batteries — suited to active riders who are willing to put in significant physical effort and aren't looking for maximum assistance. Electrification kits (retrofits on a conventional bike) are not suited to intensive use: insufficient reliability and integration over the long run. Note: electric assistance is legally capped at 250 W in Europe, which comes on top of the power the rider produces (50 to 200 W depending on fitness level). On daily commutes, the assist therefore often exceeds muscle power.

Battery and charger

An e-bike's range depends on battery capacity (expressed in Wh) and the assistance level used. Charging is an often underestimated parameter. The standard charger supplied with most e-bikes is 2 A: it takes about ten hours to recharge a full battery. A 4 A charger allows a partial recharge at the office over half a day. A 6 A charger brings the full recharge time down to under two hours. For daily bike commuting, investing in a fast charger or having a charging point at your workplace spares you the hassles of energy logistics.

Drivetrain

On an e-bike, the motor accelerates drivetrain wear — chain, cassette, and chainring — particularly with mid-drive systems, which multiply the mechanical forces. Component quality is therefore an important criterion. The Shimano lineup is the most widespread benchmark. From best to most affordable: XTR, Deore XT, SLX, Deore. Deore XT represents the best quality-to-price compromise for intensive e-bike use. See #301 - Technical basics and equipment for component details.

Brakes

For use with a child seat or trailer, hydraulic disc brakes are essential. More powerful and more progressive than mechanical or rim brakes, they compensate for the loaded bike's extra weight and improve safety on wet descents. Disc brakes are also easier to adjust and maintain than rim-brake systems. See #301 - Technical basics and equipment.

Frame materials

Aluminum is the standard choice for a commuting e-bike: good stiffness-to-weight ratio, resistance to everyday knocks, wide availability across all manufacturers. Carbon, vulnerable to scratches and impacts, is poorly suited to daily use in an urban environment. Conventional steel suffers on salted winter roads. Stainless steel is rare and expensive. Titanium is practically unavailable in an electric configuration.

Brands and models

Canyon offers a structured e-bike lineup with several trim levels per model (numbered, with the highest number corresponding to the most complete configuration). The Pathlite:ON in version 7 — integrated rack, lights, kickstand, mudguards — is a benchmark for loaded commuting or towing a trailer. The Roadlite:ON is a lighter alternative, suited to shorter, less demanding commutes. Riese & Müller sits at the high end, with polished finish and integration. Flyer also offers solid commuting-oriented models. The mainstream brands (Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, Scott) offer accessible products, but part of the pricing reflects brand recognition.
